Fashion Design

Course Description:

Fashion Design is an aesthetic and technical exploration of fashion as functional pieces of art. Creation of garments will be emphasized, but fashion history and criticism will also be addressed. Students learn and apply various aspects of design necessary to create sketches, clothing designs, and actual garments. Students will explore modern fashion trends to gain an understanding of the cultural, social, political, and economic influences on fashion design. Through demonstrations and the use of industry vocabulary, students will learn how to read patterns and operate a sewing machine properly and construct functioning pieces. Throughout the year, students will gain an understanding of how fashion design is connected to other academic disciplines and the various career opportunities in the field. Drawing skills are a plus, but are not required. This course can be taken to fulfill a Practical Art or VPA credit at La Costa Canyon High School.
